“Auf-what? Aufguss?” It’s a question often heard outside the largest sauna at the Spa Village. This ancient ritual remains unfamiliar to many here in Canada. But with a national championship coming to Thermea Spa Village Whitby this summer, a new question is being asked: “What’s an Aufgusshow?”
Let’s dive into both—and what makes them so different.
Rooted in European sauna culture, Aufguss, which is German for “infusion,” is a multi-sensory ritual that transforms a traditional sauna session into something much more immersive. It’s guided by an Aufgussmeister or Ritual Artisan, as we call them in the Village, who pours water or snowballs infused with essential oils onto hot stones, filling the sauna with fragrant steam. They then use a series of towel-waving movements to circulate the air in a rhythmical choreography that’s as meditative as it is impressive.
No two Aufguss sessions are alike. Some are serene and quiet, where the only sound is the swoosh of towels slicing through steam. Others are set to music, adding an extra layer of atmosphere.
The exact origins of sauna culture are hard to trace, though it’s widely believed to have begun in Northern Europe, especially in Finland, over 2,000 years ago. As for the Aufguss ritual, it likely evolved from a practical need: refreshing the air in enclosed, heavily used saunas. Water was poured over hot stones to restore humidity, and towels were spun to circulate the air. Over time, this basic gesture turned into an art form—complete with refined movements, music, and aromatherapy.
Saunas can be found around the world, but the way they’re used varies by culture. In places like Germany, Austria, Finland and the Netherlands, sauna-going is deeply social, even ceremonial. This is where the Aufguss ritual took root and blossomed—supported by formal training schools, competitions, and community events. In other parts of the world, the sauna is often seen as a quick health stop. But through rituals like Aufguss, it becomes something more: a cultural experience that brings people together through heat, scent, and shared stillness.
If the classic Aufguss ritual is quiet and introspective, the show Aufguss is its theatrical counterpart. In this style of sauna performance, Ritual Artisans (or Aufgussmeister) bring together heat, scent, music, lights and movement in incredibly choreographed routines that transform the sauna into a stage through storytelling. The artists choose themes to weave stories around. The sauna is their canvas. Every gesture is intentional, every moment designed to captivate. This is wellness as performance art, everything dialled up to the next level.
Now, this spectacular tradition arrives in North America in a competitive format. Aufgusshow 2025 will be Canada’s first national Aufguss championships—an exciting new chapter in the global story of sauna culture. This event will determine who earns a place on Team Canada at the prestigious Aufguss World Masters Championship in Verona, Italy in September.
Taking place from June 17 to 19, 2025, at Thermea Spa Village Whitby, Aufgusshow 2025 is Canada’s inaugural National Sauna Performance Championship. Over three days, 20 talented Aufgussmeister from across the country will present 18 live performances each with unique themes and blending tradition with creativity in a spectacular display of skill and sensory storytelling. It’s more than a competition—it’s a celebration of culture, community, and the art of the Aufguss.
While both offer heat, scent, and rhythm, an everyday Aufguss is rooted in relaxation and wellness—a soothing, meditative ritual led with intention and care. The show Aufguss featured in the Aufgusshow, on the other hand, is a bold and expressive performance. Think theatre in a sauna: dramatic music, choreographed towel work, and a narrative woven through scent and sound. It’s a collective experience; one the entire room lives together. As the sauna fills with rising heat and aromatic waves, every movement is felt by all, every reaction shared. The audience doesn’t just watch the performance; they respond to it, breathe through it, and feel the crescendo of each towel wave as one.
