Understanding Show Aufguss and Modern Classic Aufguss

Last year, Aufgusshow introduced a new kind of spectacle to the Spa Village. The sauna became a stage, and Show Aufguss brought storytelling, music, and choreography into the heart of the ritual.

This year, something new arrives.

For the 2026 edition of the Canadian National Aufguss Championship, a second performance category makes its debut at Logga: the Modern Classic Aufguss. Rooted in tradition, it offers a different way to experience the craft, one that shifts the focus from storytelling to technique.

Across three days, competitors may take the stage once, twice, or even three times: presenting solo and duo Show Aufguss performances, as well as stepping into this new Modern Classic category.

A Brief Look at Aufguss Rituals

At its core, Aufguss is a guided sauna ritual. Water or snowballs infused with essential oils are poured over hot stones, releasing waves of heat that are then circulated through towel movements. At the Spa Village, rituals are offered every day by Ritual Artisans and are included in the Spa Village access.

Simple in form, yet rich in sensation, it’s a practice that has evolved over time, shaped by both tradition and creativity.

At Aufgusshow 2026, that evolution takes centre stage.

What’s the Difference Between the Two?

The Show Aufguss

The Show Aufguss is theatrical by nature.

Each performance is built around a storyline. Music, lighting, and costume work together with choreographed towel movements to create a fully immersive experience. The sauna transforms, moment by moment, into a setting shaped by imagination.

Every detail supports the narrative. Every gesture is part of the performance. This type of Aufguss is completely unlike the Village Rituals performed every day in the Spa Village.

In 2026, this category includes both solo and duo performances, bringing either individual expression or shared storytelling to the stage.

The Modern Classic Aufguss

Making its debut in Whitby this year, the Modern Classic Aufguss offers a different perspective.

Here, the focus returns to the essentials of the ritual. Technique, control, and flow take precedence. The experience is shaped through precise towel work, the careful use of essential oils, and a deep respect for traditional practice.

There are no theatrical elements layered on top. Instead, the performance is carried by the craft itself; by how heat is built, guided, and felt throughout the session.

It’s a more restrained approach, where subtlety creates impact.

Experience Both at Aufgusshow 2026

From May 26 to 28, at Thermea Spa Village Whitby, 19 Aufgussmeister will present 24 performances across these categories.

For those stepping into Logga, it’s a chance to experience the full range of Aufguss; where new traditions take shape alongside established ones, and where each performance reveals a different facet of the ritual.
