Our Holiday Escape to Thermea Spa Village Whitby

The weeks leading up to the holidays always seem to move a little faster. Between a flurry of colourful wrapping, last-minute invites, and that tiny voice reminding us of yet another gift to buy, we realized it was time to do something different. This year, instead of adding more things and to-dos, we gifted ourselves something quietly luxurious: a day at Thermea Spa Village Whitby with the Signature Package. This kind of escape doesn’t require flights, but it still feels like a vacation.

The Signature Package is the ultimate gift: it includes access to the Spa Village, a 60-minute massage, access to Kalla, and a $50 restaurant credit.

Each guest gets access to a locker that comes with a robe and towel. All that you need to bring for a stress-free time is your bathing suits and flip flops! Oh, and maybe that book you’ve been dying to finish.

Thermal Cycle: Warm, Cold, Linger

Thermea Spa Village is a Nordic spa, with outdoor pools, saunas, steam rooms and cold plunges that aim to promote wellness and relaxation. As soon as we arrived, we began with the signature thermal cycle. We started in the steam room (Claudia’s favourite), did a cold plunge, switched to the sauna, and ended up in the warm pools.

We also tried one of the many complimentary meditation classes that take place in the sauna throughout the day. The Arboreal Sauna Ritual was such a cool experience—it was a guided meditation that combined the smell of birch branches, heat and refreshing cool air to allow you to feel as if you’re walking through the wilderness.

There were plenty of loungers and hammocks set up throughout the Spa Village, allowing us to sit in front of the fire and relax during the third step of the thermal cycle.

And as if our day couldn’t get any more relaxing, we treated ourselves to a 60-minute massage for the ultimate unwind.

Float Therapy: Weightless in Winter

Midday, we drifted into the Kalla Epsom Salt float bath. This is an Experience Plus add-on, which takes place underground in a candlelit cellar whose decor transports you elsewhere. Float baths allow us to experience weightlessness, with the warm mineral water cradling us and allowing us to press pause on everything. We stayed afloat for 30 minutes listening to the soft underwater music, relaxing our muscles and nervous system. Since Claudia suffers from chronic pain in her neck, this was pure bliss.

Field to Table Dining

After the most relaxing start to the day, we decided to check out the spa’s restaurants and put the $50 dining credit included in the Signature Package to good use. There are three venues to choose from when dining here: Le Resto, which specializes in local gastronomy, the Lounge, which serves shareable dishes and the Biergarden with its local beers and bites. We opted for Le Resto and the food was incredible—seasonal, comforting and elevated without being overdone. We tried the roasted carrots that came topped with roasted quinoa, pomegranate seeds on a bed of yogurt, in addition to the panko-crusted mac and cheese. We had to get the recipe for the carrots and try them at home because they were truly delicious and we can’t stop thinking about them!

From the moment you step through the door, Thermea Spa Village has this way of making it easy to let go. One minute you’re thinking, “I should relax” … and the next you’re actually doing it.
